In the past few decades, many middle-aged women have experienced relief from the side effects of menopause thanks to therapies like bioidentical hormone replacement or even herbal supplements that contain plant-based estrogens.
Now a group of scientists at a Greek fertility clinic is claiming to have gone one step further. Gynecologist Konstantinos Sfakianoudis presented the findings of a study he did on postmenopausal women to the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology. He conducted an experiment that made postmenopausal women fertile again.
The researchers injected platelet-rich plasma (PRP) in the ovaries of “30 postmenopausal women between the ages of 46 and 49.”
PRP is essentially blood with the red blood cells removed (called “plasma”). Importantly, this plasma is rich in platelets that are disc-shaped fragments of bone marrow cells. Platelets secrete growth factors that are thought to regenerate and heal tissues in the body 1.

The PRP was able to make the ovaries produce eggs once again, meaning that women who had already experienced menopause could become pregnant 2. The researchers said that the PRP procedure made two thirds of the women produce eggs again 2!
Researchers aren’t absolutely sure how PRP would rejuvenate the ovaries, but it’s likely that the growth factors that PRP contains stimulate stem cells that “regenerate tissue and produce ovulation hormones.” After all, stem cells can heal tissue and replace damaged cells in tissues such as ovaries.

The Wider Effects of Rejuvenating the Ovaries
It’s speculated that if ovaries can resume egg production, the negative symptoms of estrogen loss in menopause might be avoided. There’s no proof yet that this is the case, but further studies might find that hormones could be replenished in this way.
The Greek researchers say that many of the women resumed having periods after treatment 2. One woman who restarted menstruating hadn’t had a period in five years 2.
If procedures like this can restart youthful hormone production, women’s health could be vastly improved. The loss of estrogen and other sex hormones that middle age women experience causes a number of negative health effects. These include loss of collagen, weakening of the bones, aging of the skin, cognitive decline, increased oxidative damage, and accelerated aging.
Does PRP Work?
Researchers who have surveyed studies on PRP say the results are mixed. The procedure is usually tested on people with athletic injuries, and researchers have found that PRP causes improvement in some cases (like with osteoarthritis) but inconsistent or insignificant results are shown for other injuries 1.
Regardless of the results of past research, the Greek gynecologists found PRP to be effective in their experiment. But we’ll have to wait for further research to be published to determine if PRP injections can truly and consistently have incredible effects on aging ovaries.
But for now, if you’re concerned about menopause, there are ways to fight the effects of estrogen deficiency.
